Post-Surgical Instructions for Liposuction
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Your surgeon will discuss with you post-surgical instructions for liposuction. These instructions may change immediately following the procedure based on what transpired before, during, and immediately following the procedure.
You can expect to feel some pain for up to two weeks. Typically your surgeon will suggest you use over-the-counter pain relief. You will have swelling which can last from two to eight weeks. This is something that will depend on your physiology. You can also expect bruising that will fade after a few days but could last for several weeks. Your surgeon may advise you to let him or her know if you do not see any improvement in the bruising or if it appears to be getting worse.
It is common to experience numbness for several weeks. Your surgeon will give you instructions on when to notify his or her practice if you still experience numbness after a prolonged period of time.
Normal activities for each patient will differ and, therefore, your surgeon will let you know when you can return to yours. You can expect to hear a time frame between a few days to a few weeks depending on the procedure, your reaction to it and the nature and extent of your typical daily activities.
During your recovery period you should drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. You should avoid heating pads in effected areas and only take medications cleared by your surgeon. Make sure you get immediate medical attention if you feel any shortness of breath.
Your surgeon will advise you to wait several months (even as many as six) before evaluating the success of the procedure. At this time you can speak to your surgeon about those results.
To find out if you are a good candidate for the liposuction procedure, and to find out which type of liposuction is right for you, speak to an experienced cosmetic surgeon.
Depending on your goals, bariatric surgery, cosmetic surgery and dermatology treatments can produce subtle results or completely transform your appearance. If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, speak with an expert in the appropriate field to find out what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.
